The flu is a viral infection which is easily spread from person to person in airway secretions for example when sneezing. Influenza infection predominantly affects the airways but influenza causes a high fever and pronounced aching-usually more severe than other respiratory infections. The number of annual influenza-related hospitalizations is many times the number of deaths.
According to the Centre for Disease Control in the United States: “Influenza vaccination is the primary method for preventing influenza and its severe complications. Vaccination is associated with reductions in influenza-related respiratory illness and doctor visits among all age groups, hospitalization and death among persons at high risk, otitis media among children, and work absenteeism among adults.”
The Influenza vaccine, also known as a Flu Jab, is an annual vaccine to protect against the influenza virus.
WHO Collaborating Centres are continually collecting data about the circulating viruses worldwide. These data provide information about the predominant influenza viruses currently spreading and circulating in different parts of the world.
Twice a year a WHO committee meets to consider the data and recommend suitable strains to be included in the next seasonal influenza vaccines;
- February: vaccines for the following Northern Hemisphere winter (November-April)
- September: vaccines for the following Southern Hemisphere winter (March-October)
These recommendations are made 5-6 months ahead of vaccine release to allow time for production.
In each individual country, national authorities make the final decision on vaccine composition, usually in consideration of the WHO recommendation.

Malaria is spread by the bite of the female anopheline mosquito. Most anopheline species prefer to feed between dusk and dawn which is when most transmission of malaria occurs. Malaria is now predominantly a disease affecting Africa, South and Central America, Asia and the Middle East.
You will need to discuss your risk with your doctor as it will depend on your destination, your previous vaccination record, your trip duration, your accommodation type, your holiday activities and many more.

Bites by mosquitoes: prevent or avoid
Compliance with appropriate Chemoprophylaxis
Diagnose breakthrough malaria swiftly and obtain treatment promptly
Recent guidelines give greater emphasis to the importance of balancing the risk of malaria and the risk of adverse reactions to antimalarial.

When you work with biological agents, vaccination including work related travel vaccinations can be an essential component of the overall health and safety management program. Safe effective vaccines such as hepatitis B vaccine, hepatitis A vaccine, BCG and others are available against a wide range of biological hazards.
As part of the hierarchy of controls vaccination is not seen as the primary means of protection and is instead an important component part of the overall program which also will include risk assessment and management, safe working practices, universal precautions, monitoring, training, health surveillance, and keeping records.
If a biological hazard has been identified, Corporate Health Ireland can help you to determine as part of the risk assessment whether vaccination of staff should be considered and can then deliver a quality vaccination program using our online appointment booking facility and dedicated vaccination recording software. We can deliver the vaccine at your workplace or staff can be seen at one of our many clinics.
We stock a wide range of vaccines and therefore can respond speedily to any requests. We can also manage appointment reminders, any necessary documentation such as consent forms, and can provide a text system to help staff to remember.
